presence unknown is a new vinyl and digital label curated by longtime producer and dj, neil keating aka controlled weirdness. neil has been behind the decks and deeply involved in all aspects of club and underground sound system culture since the early eighties. he has released his music on numerous underground labels and performed all over the world, from plush clubs to dirty warehouses. worth a read are a couple of published articles by neil regarding his experiences on the dance floor of underground clubs in london and new york in the eighties. see links at the bottom of this page for these as well as a detailed biography and discography. there is also a link to a recent 40-minute interview with distant planet tv that explores his cultured rave history. the second release on presence unknown contains four future-retro house grooves from controlled weirdness crafted using a variety of analogue and digital hardware in his south london studio.

azimute, das sind cesare marchese und der einigen techno-insidern nicht unbekannte schweizer philippe quenum. was die beiden zusammen fabrizieren lässt uns tatsächlich sprachlos zurück: obwohl sie gerade mal auf sieben releases zurückblicken, haben die zwei es doch tatsächlich geschafft in kürzester zeit auf labels wie crosstown rebels oder sogar transmat zu landen… und jetzt auch noch den weg auf cocoon recordings gefunden! ihr titel „the secret“ gibt ein wenig vor, was wir gerade beschrieben haben, denn momentan kann man azimute noch wirklich als geheimtipp bezeichnen. ihr cocoon release dürfte einer unserer releases mit dem höchsten soul-faktor sein. betörende vocals, klackernde percussion-sounds aus den untiefen des techno-klanguniversums und im zusätzlichen house-mix noch mal alles mit warmen und hypnotischen filter chords dekoriert servieren uns azimute eine produktion mit unglaublich viel tiefgang. azimute erwischt uns hier voll auf dem richtigen fuß, die beiden originalversionen werden uns noch lange über die kommenden wochen begleiten. als bonus gibt es noch einen cristi cons remix obendrauf. in bester villalobos oder cadenza spielart entfaltet dieser über sage und schreibe 11 minuten und 34 sekunden seinen minimalvibe und öffnet damit noch mal eine weitere faszinierende musikalische tür. drei versionen, die alles aber nicht gewöhnlich sind und die hier seit tagen in heavy rotation laufen! mile grazie azimute!

the unblock label hits its seventh release with a split ep featuring rising talents tato and tijn. the sound on the 12inch fits right in with the previous transmissions from tuccillo, tomoki tamura and more besides, taking a quirky approach to stripped down house and techno dynamics to create intriguing party fodder for inquisitive dancers. tatos estic does a wondrous job of twisting up tribal percussion with a snaking minimal groove, while lusyourmaind brings a cheeky housey shuffle to the proceedings while keeping things a little mysterious in the same breath. tijns stranger things is a light and airy minimal house jam that contrasts neatly with the hook running through the centre of piano tool.

2018 repress / vinyl only!! with its debut release, in any case is trying to give you the best and dustiest takes on house, hip-hop and disco, packed on one and only piece of wax. we are very proud to showcase five amazing tracks from five different artists from around the world on this first record. mr. pc from detroit (us) kicks things off with a stunning disco edit, “boogie with me” delivering a mastered groove throughout the whole title, perfect for all the dancefloors. then comes “another lonely man” by martin hayes from leipzig (de). we’re left with a heavy bottomed-end track featuring lush strings and nice vocals. on the flip, we’ve then got pascal viscardi from geneva (ch) and his “fuorigrotta” that comes from deep, deep down with its heavy kicks cutting through amazing synths and disco loops, packed together with that 90’s sp1200 sampler flavour. then, malouane from france (fr) continues the trip with “i did this at work”, another bass-heavy groove melting down below some perfectly arranged samples. finally, we’ve got g2s & ibn sabaa from france (fr) with their “dumb ruler”, a short and wonky hip hop instrumental, blending the fender rhodes sound we all love with dripping hats and screwed breakdowns. there is something for every taste here, so jump on it while it’s hot !

as ever, the next project on opilec music is one with a rich back story this time paying homage to a very specific disco scene of the early 80s: it finds label boss i-robots turning out one of his brilliant reconstructions, namely of a classic and cult track by one hit wonders ahzz. this track was first released on land of hits, a label run by peter brown (who also wrote -material girl- for madonna) and michael campbell and has now been officially licensed for this reissue by opilec music. the track, new york s movin was huge on the new york disco scene and was played by the likes of david mancuso at the loft, larry levan at the paradise garage and by nicky siano at studio 54, but continued to be a big hit with modern new york tastemakers kenny dope, dj spinna, danny krivit and his body & soul party crew well into the 90s, as well as with stars like motor city drum ensemble and bulljun. i-robots is a notorious producer and record collector with a vast understanding of the history of house and disco and his version combines an original vocal and instrumental version into something really magical. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take i) is a jangling, organic and lose limbed disco number with a funky drum line, soul in its bones and plenty of lovably rough percussion, clicks and drums. a retro and impassioned vocal line adds flair to the track at the midpoint just before that groove kicks once more. this version is featured on the new i-robots - reconstructions 2007-2017 10th year anniversary release. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take ii) is then just as emotive and outgoing but after the break has more of a focus on funk. this is a huge party starting track filled with feel good vibes and once again proves opilec music work on only the most special projects.

this one is for people who like the real disco tools. for dudes who love the style of dj harvey, prins thomas or todd terje. for djs that want the girls to dance. toy tonics lead honcho black loops teamed up with italo-spanish dj innocent soul in his berlin studio. do we have to introduce black loops? not really: he started his career on toy tonics three years ago. meanwhile did 5 eps on the label - including his main club hit sex (that was one of the 50 most sold house tracks on beatport in 2016). innocent soul is a young italian living in barcelona where he is a quite established kid in the nightlife scene. vittorio rinaldi his name. he is resident dj at space music garden project and resident for the modular project at city hall. like black loops he is not really innocent. at least if it comes to music. he is a huge lover and collector of disco, afro, black, raw and house music vinyl. you can hear the influences in this ep for sure. rollin. this ep is a bomb.
